Putting ex-presidents on trial

Last Sunday, facing Guadalajara’s central Plaza de Armas, political activists set up tables to collect signatures to request that a survey be carried out to decide whether to prosecute former Mexican presidents for alleged acts of corruption.

The photographs of ex-presidents Enrique Peña Nieto, Felipe Calderon and Carlos Salinas de Gortari were prominently on display.

The activists will need to collect signatures representing two percent of Mexico’s electoral register to initiate a national referendum on the matter.
