Snags emerge as vaccine rollout for seniors begins

Brigades of health workers began to apply the first batch of Covid-19 vaccines designated for citizens over age 60 in 23 Jalisco municipalities as of Tuesday, February 16.

pg1aThe 58,690 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine are part of a shipment of 870,000 doses sent to Mexico from India last weekend. The doses distributed to Jalisco are sufficient to inoculate 6.3 percent of its over-60s population, which, according to the latest census findings, is 923,131.

Fernando Petersen Aranguren, Jalisco’s health secretary, said the first doses will be given to the elderly in zones of the state with “high marginalization and vulnerability.” In total, 29 vaccination centers have been installed to inoculate people in 23 municipalities, located in the six “health regions” of Puerto Vallarta, Colotlán, Ameca, Autlán, Tamazula and Ciudad Guzmán.

The federal government’s decision to start the inoculation program in more remote areas of Mexico, instead of urban conglomerations where Covid-19 is rampant, has been strongly criticized by some medical experts.
