Mexico’s Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) has ruled out the existence of a Mexican variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus after analyzing four samples in which a mutation was identified by University of Guadalajara (UdG) researchers.
After sequencing the virus genome, InDRE confirmed that only the E484K mutation was detected, and also ruled out the presence of the Brazilian, South Africa and United Kingdom strains.
The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) also sent to InDRE a positive Codiv-19 sample taken from a female traveler from Brazil in early January. InDRE subsequently confirmed the presence of the Brazilian variant 501Y.V3, Petersen said.
