Prosecute former presidents? Nation to decide on August 1

A plebiscite on whether to allow prosecutions of five former presidents will take place across Mexico on Sunday, August 1, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has announced.

pg2bBoth Mexico’s Supreme Court and the National Electoral Institute (INE) have approved the referendum, which would see the public decide whether Lopez Obrador’s five predecessors – Carlos Salinas, Ernesto Zedillo, Vicente Fox, Felipe Calderon and Enrique Peña – should face charges for any alleged abuses committed during their terms of office.
