Covid rebound possible, coronavirus czar warns

Mexico’s Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez Gatell warned this week of a likely rebound in the Covid-19 infection rate going into this weekend, but stressed that new restrictions will not be necessary.

On Wednesday, Mexico’s chief coronavirus spokesperson said national trends are indicating a potential increase in contagion of between 15 to 18 percent during the week in progress.

Although Mexico has the fourth highest total of deaths from the pandemic (231,847), hospitalizations have fallen more than 80 percent since the nationwide vaccination program started in February.

Lopez Gatell said the Covid rebound in recent weeks has been particularly pronounced in the tourist states of Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur, where health authorities report new cases exceeding the number registered during the “second wave” earlier this year.
