No more restrictions, pandemic supremo promises

Despite the rising transmission rate amid a third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, Deputy Heath Minister Hugo López-Gatell has ruled out further lockdowns and closures of businesses in Mexico, saying that “people are tired” of restrictions and confinement measures.

On Wednesday, July 21, 15,198 new cases were reported nationwide over a 24-hour period, the highest figure since January.  The mortality rate, however, is not increasing in tandem with the infection numbers, and remains relatively low.

Lopez-Gatell said changes to the Covid traffic light methodology means that even states with high transmission rates falling in the high-risk “red” category will not be required to observe previous restrictions, such as closing off public spaces or suspending school classes.  Compliance with sanitary measures, however, must remain in effect, he insisted.
