Mexican government unconvinced about vaccinating kids, or booster jabs

Mexico’s Deputy Health Minister Hugo López-Gatell has accused pharmaceutical companies of mounting a “powerful” campaign about the need for minors to have anti-Covid vaccinations. He also poured cold water on suggestions that a third “booster” jab for adults is necessary.

Lopez Gatell said there is an extremely low risk of children becoming ill or dying from Covid-19. He said inoculating children is also unnecessary since the current vaccines are “not expected to substantially help reduce transmission from children.”

The deputy minister, who is the federal government’s chief coronavirus spokesperson, said there is no scientific evidence that indicates a booster dose is required.

On Wednesday, Pfizer released data suggesting a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine “strongly” boosts protection against the Delta variant.
