AMLO to release 12,000 inmates

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is planning a mass release of prisoners who are still awaiting sentencing after spending ten years or more behind bars.

Remarkably, he estimates this segment of the nation’s prison population to be around 12,000. Only prisoners accused of non-violent crimes will be eligible.

Others also eligible for release include inmates over 65 serving time for non-violent federal crimes, those with chronic illnesses, and prisoners who can prove they were tortured by police in order to extract confessions.
