Mexico-UK travel gets a lot more complicated

The United Kingdom government has deemed the current situation in Mexico to be a potential breeding ground for SARS-CoV-2 variants that could undermine its vaccine effort.

For this reason, Mexico will be added to the UK’s travel red list, as of Sunday, August 8.

This means people who have been in Mexico in the last 10 days will only be allowed to enter the United Kingdom if they are a British or Irish national, or have UK residence rights.

Since February, everyone who had arrived in the UK from a red list country has been required by law to book a stay in a managed quarantine hotel for 10 days.

Most people in the UK who have booked vacations in Mexico are now expected to cancel them, since the new quarantine rules in force on their return home will add substantially to their cost.
