The National Statistics Institute (Inegi) reports that 21.1 million Mexicans over the age of 18 were victims of some kind of criminal act in 2020.
Due to the pandemic, the figure is down on the 2019 figure of 22.3 million, but nonetheless still a high number, Inegi Director Julio Santaella said. The most dangerous places were Mexico City and Estado de Mexico, where around one in three adults were victims of crime last year. Ingei said the average financial loss to crime in 2020 worked out at 7,155 pesos per person.
