Mexican vaccine on track; booster shots not needed

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Mexico’s home-produced Covid-19 vaccine, known as “Patria,” is entering the second stage of trials, after “good results” in the preliminary stage.

The announcement that Mexico is developing its own vaccine came in April of this year.  At that time, the president suggested the vaccine might be ready for regulatory approval by the end of 2021.  This week, he did not say whether finishing the trials and getting the vaccine rubber stamped by this date was still viable.
Meanwhile, López Obrador said health experts are not recommending anti-Covid booster shots at this time but admitted the idea is “being analyzed.”  As of this week, 71 percent of Mexico’s adult population had received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to Health Ministry data.
