Mexico rolls out booster shots

Tuesday, December 7, Deputy Heath Minister Hugo López-Gatell announced the start of a program of booster vaccine doses against Covid-19 for Mexico’s over-60s population.

pg1bSetting the rollout in motion, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador received his booster jab Tuesday at the start of a visit to Jalisco.

An accelerated rollout of booster jabs can be expected, as Covid cases surge in many countries due to the quick spreading Omicron variant.

A single dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be available to all seniors in Mexico, regardless of the vaccines they were previously administered, López-Gatell said. Studies and field experience in Europe show that combining Astra Zeneca with other vaccines is safe and offers good protection against the coronavirus, several experts commented Tuesday.

The booster rollout has started in six states: Jalisco, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Sinaloa and Yucatan.

Everyone who completed their full vaccination schedule more than six months ago is eligible for a booster shot, López-Gatell said.
