Booster jabs: Covid wave leaves many in limbo

The Omicron variant surge across Mexico and the rest of the world has left many people stricken by the disease wondering how long they should wait until after the infection has dissipated before they go for a booster shot.

pg1eSome are also asking whether they even need to get a booster jab if they have been infected, given that many studies show antibodies can protect people from reinfection for up to six months.

Application of booster shots in Jalisco only began in earnest at the start of the year, and while health authorities say half a million have already gotten the additional vaccine, hundreds of people have been forced to cancel appointments after going down with Covid.

Early in the pandemic, the CDC recommended waiting 90 days after a Covid-19 infection to get a vaccination. Now that there’s a better understanding of the virus, the guidelines have changed significantly. The CDC now recommends waiting to get a booster until all symptoms resolve and the patient finishes isolation (usually a maximum of two weeks, but reduced to five days for asymptomatic people with the Omicron variant), although the agency doesn’t specify an exact time.
