AMLO’s austerity credentials questioned as son’s luxury US properties are exposed

Not for the first time, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has ignited a bitter feud with one of Mexico’s leading journalists and broadcasters.

pg3aAMLO branded Carlos Loret de Mola “a corrupt mercenary without principles” after the journalist published a report contrasting the luxurious lifestyle of the president’s eldest son, José Ramón López Beltrán, with his much trumpeted austerity philosophy and frequent criticisms of officials from past administrations living lavish lifestyles.

In a report published on the Latinus and Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) websites, Loret de Mola revealed that López Beltrán owns two houses in Houston, Texas, one of them “located on 2,500 square meters in one of the most exclusive private areas of the Jacobs Reserve subdivision, where residences are valued at more than a million dollars.”

The house has “four bathrooms, four bedrooms, a bar, a game room, a 23-meter pool, and even a movie theater,” the report said. The president’s son also owns a Mercedes-Benz van, with a value of 1.5 million pesos ($US69,000), Loret de Mola said.
