Children ages 5-11 cleared for Covid shots

Registrations for Covid-19 vaccines for children from ages 5 to 11 began on Thursday, June 16, following the announcement of the new program earlier this week by Mexico’s Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children in this age group back in October 2021.  Lopez-Gatell, Mexico’s chief coronavirus spokesperson, stressed on various occasions that young children didn’t need inoculating since the likelihood of their becoming seriously ill from the virus was minimal.

All children between 5 and 11 residing in Mexico can receive the Pfizer vaccine free of charge.  Registration should be completed online at https://mivacuna.salud.gob.mx.

Eight million Pfizer shots are earmarked to inoculate this group of children, Lopez-Gatell said. Municipalities will oversee the vaccinations, which will be carried out at health clinics and immunization macrocenters, he said.
