Retuning to ‘God’s clock’

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s initiative to eliminate Daylight Saving Time in Mexico has been sent to the Chamber of Deputies (lower house) for debate.

This week, Health Minister Jorge Alcocer Varela laid out much of the reasoning behind the move, which he said will improve the health of Mexicans.

Specifically, Alcocer mentioned the potential reduction in heart attacks and digestive disorders, as well as hormonal disorders and general malaise, that eliminating the twice yearly clock change would bring.

Alcocer said the move would be beneficial to students, allowing them to be “more alert,” as well as for adults who require maximum concentration to perform their functions adequately at the beginning of the day.

Alcocer also mentioned data from The Society for Research on Biological Rhythms, which he said proves the benefits of standard time compared to summer time.

The health minister said retuning to standard time was also important, because it means that, year-round, the nation will be back on track with “the clock of God.”
