US State Dept. updates Guanajuato travel advisory

The U.S. State Department has issued an updated advisory concerning travel to the state of Guanajuato following the violent acts carried out on August 9 (see story above).

“U.S. citizens are reminded to reconsider travel to Guanajuato state due to crime,” reads the advisory dated August 10.  The massive goes on to say that U.S. government employees have been restricted from traveling on Highway 45 from Irapuato to the cities of Silao and Leon, and are not to travel to the area south of and including Federal Highway 45D, as well as the cities of Celaya, Salamanca and Irapuato.

“Gang violence, often associated with the theft of petroleum and natural gas from the state oil company and other suppliers, occurs in Guanajuato, primarily in the south and central areas of the state. Of particular concern is the high number of murders in the southern region of the state associated with cartel-related violence,” says the advisory.

As well as the above information, the State Department urges U.S. citizens to “be aware of their surroundings, follow instructions of local authorities and monitor local media for updates and in case of emergency, call 911.”
