Mexicanos rally around their flag

The people of Mexico embrace their national banner with unbridled fervor during September’s patriotic celebration.

pg13aThe war of independence ended with the signing of the Plan de Iguala, February 24, 1821. The date was eventually designated as Dia de la Bandera, the national holiday for honoring the country’s flag.

Both the flag and the national escudo (coat-of-arms) have changed in appearance multiple times through two centuries of history. The flag’s current design was adopted in 1968. Official protocols on their use are strictly protected under federal law enacted in 1984.
