Could Mexico’s next president finally be a woman?

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum is making no secret of her ambition to follow Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as president of Mexico.

pg7aAnd while official campaigning is prohibited until few months prior to the 2024 general election, she must first win her party’s nomination, which means raising her profile on a national scale.  Hence Sheinbaum’s much publicized recent weekend visit to Guadalajara, an exercise that on the surface encompassed some official duties, but had all the hallmarks of a campaign stopover.

While close to Lopez Obrador, Sheinbaum, 60, is a complete contrast to the current incumbent. Measured, soft spoken and methodical in her analysis of current events, she is fully aware of the symbolic effect that being the first women president would have on girls and young women in Mexico.
