Most of us will be welcoming in the New Year with our favorite tipple. And for many expats in Mexico, only one beverage will suffice: a margarita.
But while you may recognize a good margarita when you taste one, you probably don’t know how the popular tequila-based cocktail got its name.
You can take your pick from several versions but they all have one thing in common—they involve a woman named Margarita. As early as 1938, a bartender in Puebla claimed he made the drink and named it after his girlfriend. Another one of the first versions—from the 1940s—includes a showgirl named Marjorie (the English equivalent of Margarita) who was allergic to all alcohol but tequila, which she didn’t drink straight. Danny Herrera, the owner of Rancho La Gloria, near Tijuana, made several concoctions, until he came upon one that she liked.
