Jalisco to debate thesis plagiarism law change

A proposal currently in the Jalisco state legislature seeks to criminalize people who plagiarize a thesis to obtain a professional or postgraduate degree.

Presented by Julio César Hurtado of the National Action Party (PAN), guilty parties could face jail terms from six months to six years, as well as fines as high as 300,000 pesos.  Institutions that knowingly give degrees derived from plagiarized theses will also be sanctioned, up to 1.5 million pesos.
