Expat residency in Mexico surges

Well-settled expatriate residents of the Lake Chapala area have witnessed an exponential growth of the foreign immigrant population in recent years.

Statistics recently issued by the nation’s Unit of Migratory Policy (UPM) operated by the Ministry of the Interior (Gobernación) indicate that the number of United States and Canadian citizens obtaining permanent and temporary residency status has jumped 90 percent since 2020, with the boom strongest among Canadians.

Popular destinations for new immigrants from the two countries include Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo; Mérida, Yucatán; La Paz, Baja California; Bahía de Banderas, Puerto Vallarta and  Mazatlán on the Pacific coast; San Miguel de Allende, as well as the Lake Chapala region, in the interior of the nation.
