‘Eggflation’ affecting Mexico & US

A supply shortfall, inflation, the cold climate and the avian flu that recently affected poultry farms are the main reasons why the price of eggs has soared to 70 pesos a kilo in some parts of the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

In other parts of Mexico, including at the northern border, reports have surfaced of eggs retailing for as much as 80 pesos a kilo.

Mexico isn’t alone in facing “eggflation.” The cost of eggs rose by an average of 60 percent in the United States during 2022, even leading to a spate of egg smuggling across the border from Mexico.

As in Mexico, avian flu has seriously affected the U.S. egg market, with around 60 million birds sacrificed last year. This, along with higher feed and transportation costs for producers, have pushed up prices steadily, by another eight percent in January. And, according to U.S. news outlets, there are suspicions that major egg suppliers have engaged in a “collusive scheme” to gouge and fix prices to boost profits.
