President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has accused some U.S. politicians of deliberately stoking the immigration issue to create “conflict” on the U.S. Mexico border to serve their interests and political careers, especially in the lead up to the 2024 elections.
“It is not by chance,” AMLO said. “I’ve been observing it … legislators, governors … opportunistic politicians.”
AMLO said it is important to “point out the provocateurs,” highlighting the sweeping legislation signed last week by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that will make it much harder for migrants to find work in that state. “It’s politicking. What are they going to do without migrants?” López Obrador asked.
AMLO also lashed out at recent remarks made by Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) during a congressional hearing, when, comparing the size of the two countries’ economies and Mexico’s reliance on U.S. trade, he said that “without the people of America, Mexico, figuratively speaking, would be eating cat food out of a can and living in a tent behind an Outback.”
