Migrants to get temporary work visas

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says he will order his government to issue temporary work visas to Central American migrants so that his key public infrastructure works can be finished before the end of his sexenio (six-year term) in December 2024.

Migrants are likely to be employed in the Mayan Tourist Train project on the Yucatan Peninsula, the Dos Bocas refinery in Tabasco, and the program for the development of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which centers on a narrow strip bridging the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca.

The three mega projects are the main thrust of AMLO’s plan to alleviate the socioeconomic problems of the southeastern states and allow them to catch up with the more competitive and industrialized states in central and northern Mexico.

“We need many ironworkers, welders, even engineers and professionals,” López Obrador said at a press conference last week. The president, however, did not elaborate on how the migrants could apply for the work permits.
