School starts with no textbooks

A climate of uncertainty surrounds the start of the 2023-24 academic year for Jalisco’s primary and secondary school students, set for Monday, August 28.

A legal injunction suspending the distribution of the federal government’s new textbooks means that teachers and students will be forced to use other materials in their classes, at least for the time being.

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said he would abide by the decision and wait for a definitive court ruling. Textbooks that have already been delivered are being stored in a government warehouse.

This week, Alfaro sought the help of specialists at the University of Guadalajara, who he said would “study the legal status of the textbooks, as well as their contents,” in order to give the state government some room for maneuver.

The governor’s move came after he was booed by teachers during a ceremony to hand out computer supplies in advance of the school year. “Textbooks, textbooks, textbooks,” chanted one section of the audience.
