San Luis Potosi state authorities have issued a missing persons alert for Paul Jonathan Brown, 72, a U.S. citizen who runs a dog shelter in the town of Villa Juárez.
The worker who reported him missing on July 20 said she found the Ladridos de Esperanza shelter in disarray, with one vehicle missing. The San Luis Potosí State Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation, but, at press time, there had been no significant update on the case.
Brown, who opened the shelter two years ago, cares for approximately 50 dogs, as well as chickens and turkeys. Employees have stated that his behavior leading up to his disappearance seemed unusual, and they suspect foul play. They told reporters that Brown co-owns a restaurant chain in San Diego, California, and was extremely dedicated to his animals, often checking on them even when traveling.
While the investigation continues, the shelter is being managed by staff, and updates are being posted on social media. Local authorities said they have not ruled out the possibility of kidnapping.
Brown is known for tattoos of an octopus and a snake on his legs. Authorities have not confirmed any specific leads in the case.
