The assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez has sparked widespread outrage throughout Mexico, with a “National March for Peace and Justice” scheduled for Saturday, November 15.
Meanwhile, in response to the slaying, President Claudia Sheinbaum swiftly unveiled a new federal security plan for the troubled state of Michoacán.
The investigation into the November 1 murder advanced this week as Michoacán Attorney General Carlos Torres Piña identified the alleged assassin as Víctor Manuel Ubaldo Vidales, a 17-year-old methamphetamine addict from Paracho. Authorities confirmed the homicide was “related to organized crime groups,” with media reports pointing to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Ubaldo was shot and killed by a municipal police officer immediately after he allegedly opened fire on Manzo during a public Day of the Dead event.
