Two Mexican Navy ships sailed out of the port of Veracruz this week carrying more than 800 tons of rice, beans, powdered milk and canned goods bound for Cuba — the first in a series of humanitarian shipments President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to the island as it buckles under fuel rationing, blackouts and food shortages.
But the cargo holds were conspicuously empty of one commodity Mexico has long supplied to Cuba: oil.
With the Donald Trump administration threatening tariffs on any nation that sends petroleum to Cuba, Mexico has suspended crude exports to the island while continuing to dispatch food, hygiene supplies and, soon, civilian donations.
