An electric car for under 5,000 bucks

Mexico will officially unveil the prototype of Olinia, the country’s first domestically developed electric vehicle, on June 7. The car is positioned as an affordable urban mobility option at a fraction of the price of Chinese imports and Tesla models currently dominating the market.

pg3bFollowing an 18‑month development process, the four‑door compact vehicle is designed exclusively for city streets, with a maximum speed of 50 km/h and a projected price range of 90,000 to 150,000 pesos — roughly between US$4,500 and US$7,500.

In contrast, a Tesla Model 3 currently starts at about 749,000 pesos (approximately US$43,000) in Mexico, while Chinese competitor BYD offers its Dolphin Mini entry model around 358,000 pesos (approximately US$20,000). The government has stressed that Olinia will not rival premium brands, but target students, small‑business owners, delivery workers and families who have been priced out of the electromobility market.
