President Claudia Sheinbaum has dismissed a proposal to require tourists from the United States to pay a tourist visa charge to enter the country. The idea is essentially aimed at curbing the growing gentrification trend and illegal land grabs in Mexico’s coastal areas.
Responding to reporters’ questions, Sheinbaum stressed that maintaining a “fraternal relationship” with Mexico’s northern neighbors is paramount.
Her rejection of the proposal came as her administration effectively shut down a major U.S.-led tourism megaproject in the Costa Maya resort of Mahahual following sustained pressure from environmental groups.
Concerns have grown over recent years that wealthy foreign nationals, particularly remote workers, are driving up housing prices and restricting beach access in popular tourist destinations.
