Jalisco bans social media access in schools for students under 14

A new state law approved by the Jalisco Congress prohibits students under 14 years old from accessing social media platforms while on school grounds.

Screen Shot 2026 05 28 at 23.16.23The “Safe Screens Law” (Ley Pantallas Seguras), officially titled the Law to Guarantee the Rights of Children and Adolescents in Digital Environments, aims to address rising concerns over cyberbullying, sexting, online violence and data protection among minors.

The law does not impose fines or sanctions on parents or guardians who fail to regulate their children’s phone use. Penalties such as fines or closures apply only to public servants or commercial establishment owners. Instead, the law establishes a framework of shared responsibility among authorities, parents and schools.
