Nuevo Vallarta to change its name?

A report in Spanish-language daily Mural suggests that the governor of Nayarit is keen to change the name of his state’s prime touristic region from Nuevo Vallarta to Nuevo Nayarit.

A spokesperson for the Nayarit government said the reason would be to “reposition tourism in the state on national and international levels.”  Puerto Vallarta’s tourism director, contacted by Mural, commented that the moniker Nuevo Vallarta has been around for four decades and is well identified around the world.

Nuevo Vallarta is home to several five-star hotels run by well-known international chains.
