Backpacker’s run-in with venomous spider on Monkey Mountain

Several media outlets in the United Kingdom have published the story of a British backpacker who feared she might lose a leg after being bitten by a venomous Brown Recluse Spider while on a hike up the Cerro del Mono (Monkey Mountain) in Rivera Nayarit.

pg10aThis is a fairly easy and popular hike due to the stunning views of Banderas Bay, Punta Mita, and Sayulita that can be appreciated from the summit.

According to the reports, Iona McNeil, 38, paid scant attention to two fang-like marks on her left ankle that she noticed after finishing the hike, believing it was no more than a blister.

McNeil realized something was amiss when her ankle and leg began to swell up and turn purple, and she started to tremble and be violently sick.

McNeil went to a local hospital where they fixed her to an IV drip and diagnosed antibiotics and painkillers.
