Puerto Vallarta’s image as an idyllic holiday paradise is severely dented

Puerto Vallarta also found itself at the epicenter of the violence that erupted across Jalisco following the death of Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” on February 22.

Dozens of CJNG operatives were mobilized, launching a series of coordinated attacks designed to create panic that, according to the city’s mayor,  left more than 200 vehicles burned — including 27 public transport buses — and at least 72 businesses, including Oxxo convenience stores, Farmacias Guadalajara and other shops, reduced to ashes.

The destruction stretched from working-class neighborhoods to tourist zones and residential areas, with smoke plumes rising above beaches where some tourists continued sunbathing and swimming, creating jarring images that circulated globally.
