Cocula hosts 'mariachi Sundays'

The Jalisco town of Cocula is often considered the “birthplace of mariachi,” although some historians would dispute that claim.

Nonetheless, the town’s fathers are determined to promulgate this premise of heritage and have scheduled a program of mariachi-related events each Sunday.

On Sundays at 10 a.m. students from the Escuela Regional del Mariachi entertain locals and visitors in Cocula’s main plaza.  The aim is also to publicize the school and, hopefully, attract new students.

At noon the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel church will hold a mass featuring mariachis and singers.
From 3 p.m. mariachi musicians will play in the famous birria restaurants that line Calle Juarez just a few blocks from the main plaza.

At 8 p.m., the Banda Centenaria Santa Cecilia performs in the plaza’s bandstand, while in the atrium of San Miguel Arcangel, children (and adults) can enjoy games such as loteria, as vendors sell traditional Mexican evening fare, as well as locally produced candies and desserts.
