Quebec pens accord with Jalisco

Jalisco Governor Aristotoles Sandoval and Quebec Premier Pauline Marois renewed  2009 sister-state agreement at a ceremony held at the Casa Jalisco Wednesday.

The ample commercial and cultural ties between the two entities and the quantity of Quebec’s citizens now wintering or retiring in Chapala, Costalegre and Puerto Vallarta provided the impetus to rekindle the relationship.

Quebec was the invited guest at the 2003 International Book Festival and the 2012 May Cultural Festival and will be the guest of honor at next year’s Guadalajara International Film Festival.

The accord increases ties in education, science and technology with an emphasis on student exchange, language interchange and research cooperation. On the cultural side, exchanges in the areas of film production and literary expression are planned.

Commercial missions and support for importers and exporters are also included in the agreement. There is potential improvement for trade in sectors such as aerospace, agriculture, information technology, mining, transportation, biotechnology and fashion design.

Sandoval noted that Jalisco can learn much from Quebec in the sustainability of its industries and natural resource management. He is also keen to create a new tourism alliance with the province.

Quebec has eight million inhabitants and the average annual income is 44,000 dollars.
