Student transport plan takes shape

Governor Aristoteles Sandoval is fulfilling his campaign promise of providing free public transportation for students in Jalisco.

Between May 28 and June 30, 90,000 public school students successfully applied for free travel, Jalisco’s Ministry of Development and Social Integration (Sedis) revealed last week. This entitles them  to two free bus or subway (tren ligero) tickets – known as Bienevales – per day as of August 15, when the new school year begins.  Students who travel from one city to another to study will receive from 1,800 to 2,500 pesos three times a year.

The state government has invested 207 million pesos (16.5 million dollars) in the program in its initial stage. Jalisco is the first state in Mexico to completely subsidize transport for students enrolled in public schools.
