The state government has fallen a year behind schedule in its plans to provide free wireless internet in the main plazas of all 125 municipalities in Jalisco.
In April, Governor Aristoteles Sandoval promised that every municipality would have free public Wi-Fi by December 31, 2013, but Jaime Reyes, the secretary of innovation, science and technology, admitted this week that the goal will not be met until December 2014.
Reyes said that wireless internet will be installed in 60 plazas across Jalisco by November. The first municipality to benefit from the state government pledge was Ocotlan, which now has a network strong enough to support 250 devices connected at once. However, the installation cost the government 45,000 pesos, plus a monthly rental fee of 3,750 pesos.The municipality of Guadalajara already boasts its own free public Wi-Fi network, known as GDL Libre, with 151 points of access in public plazas, parks and avenidas across the city.
