Lesbian couple are first to tie the knot in Jalisco

Even though under state law same-sex marriage is illegal in Jalisco, a lesbian couple tied the knot last Saturday at a Guadalajara registry office.

Martha Sandoval and Zaira Viridiana had been refused a marriage license back in March but took their case to federal court and received an injunction earlier this month that obliged Guadalajara authorities to wed the couple, who are raising a one-year-old child.

Other same-sex couples now are expected to try to get married, although they are likely to face the same legal obstacles as Sandoval and Viridiana.
