Michoacan not safe for travel?

As the home of the beautiful colonial city Morelia, the island village of Janitzio, quaint Patzcuaro and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Michoacan is one of Mexico’s most beautiful and naturally diverse states.

Yet this may not be the best time for travelers to explore the state, as three highway blockades have sprung up across the region and at least 33 vehicles were set on fire in 13 of the state’s municipalities some ten days ago. The disturbances were carried out in retaliation to a offensive by security forces against “Los Viagra,” cartel. At least 12 of “Los Viagras” were arrested, but the state has been badly disrupted by the unrest.
