Tlajomulco city hall makes English skills a priority

Councilors in the metro-area municipality of Tlajomulco are determined that their constituents get the opportunity to learn English.

In a new move announced this week, the local government will offer a whopping 100,000 scholarships (becas) to municipal residents.

One-fifth (20,000) will be full grants, covering the total amount of the course of study.  The remaining 80,000 students will pay just five or ten percent of their 15-month course fees, either 455 pesos or 920 pesos.

Mayor Alberto Uribe said he hoped the program, Ingles para Todos (English for Everyone), would allow Tlajomulco residents to obtain better paying jobs, especially with the tech firms that are already located in the municipality.

Tlajomulco city hall is also encouraging all city employees to make an effort and improve their English skills.

Municipal officials will visit local schools to promote the program, although it is not yet clear where the classes will be held.  For more information, call (33) 3283-4400, ext. 3206.
