Pregnant women have Zika virus

Eight pregnant women in Jalisco  have contracted the Zika virus, the State Heath Department (SSJ) confirmed this week.

Three of the cases are in  Tlaquepaque, two in Zapopan, one in Guadalajara, one in Puerto Vallarta, and one in Zapotitlán de Badillo.

No damage to the fetuses has been detected in any of the cases, the SSJ said.

Studies have shown that Zika can spread from a pregnant woman to her fetus,  resulting in microcephaly, severe brain malformations and other birth defects.

The infection itself often causes no or only mild symptoms, similar to a very mild form of dengue fever.
