Santiago River communities up in arms

Residents of seven Jalisco municipalities affected by health issues most likely caused by pollution from the Santiago River staged a noisy demonstration outside the installations of the Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) Monday, demanding higher quality medical care in the region.

Chief among multiple demands was that the SSJ deploy full-time nephrologists to each of its centros de salud (heath centers) located in the seven municipalities: Ocotlan, Poncitlan, Atotonilquillo, Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, Juanacatlan, Tlajomulco and El Salto. Currently, only one – Poncitlan – has the services of a nephrologist, a doctor who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney conditions.
