Governor rejects further openings as infections surge

With Covid-19 transmissions escalating rapidly in the past week, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro says now is not the time to move the state forward into the next stage of economic reactivation.

pg6aBusiness leaders were keeping their fingers crossed that the governor would give the green light for commercial malls to reopen on June 15.  The state’s tourism sector had also been prepping for a reboot and welcoming back visitors.

Instead, in an video address, Alfaro said the “panorama has changed” and that Jalisco is “not in a position to move forward as fast as we had planned.”

Data released Thursday evening by the federal Health Ministry (Ssa) showed that Jalisco registered its highest daily number of infections in a 24-hour period (202), as well as the highest number of fatalities (26).

To highlight the rapid spread of the virus, Alfaro said as many Covid-19 deaths were recorded in the past week as in the first two months of the pandemic.
