‘New normality’ kicks in with pandemic escalating

The transmission rate of Covid-19 in Jalisco isn’t declining, but as of June 15 the state government has permitted the gradual reopening of shopping malls, hotels, beaches, sports clubs and churches, even though the governor is still urging people only to go out for essential reasons and stay at home as much as possible.

pg1aEven as more and more businesses and services reopen, no one is pretending that the Covid-19 curve has flattened.

“It’s weird. With the traffic and crowds, it feels like everything is back to normal but people are still very apprehensive, wearing masks and keeping their distance from each other,” said  Monica Buendia, a housewife who was shopping at Guadalajara’s Plaza Galerias mall on Tuesday for the first time in more than three months. “I just hope we don’t start to think that (the virus) has gone away, because we’re told that many people are still getting infected and dying.”

Wednesday, June 17, the federal Health Ministry reported 41 new Covid-19 deaths in Jalisco – the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic. While the fatalities occurred over a period of several days, the figures indicate that the disease has yet to peak in the state.

“[Infections] in Guadalajara are increasing, and could be at their maximum in another four days,”  Hugo López-Gatell, the nation’s chief coronavirus spokesperson, said at Wednesday’s press briefing.
