Congress to discuss bill to legalize same-sex adoptions

A bill permitting same-sex couples and single people to adopt children has been presented in the Jalisco Congress.

The Jalisco Civil Code currently only allows adoption by parents of different sexes.

“It is a reality of the world we are living in that a family does not necessarily conform to mom and dad,” said Norma Valenzuela of the Morena party, the promoter of the legislation “It can be a single mother, a single father, people of the same gender.”

The bill would permit single people over the age of 25 to adopt, if they are 15 years older than the child, Valenzuela said.
