Attacks by opposition won’t faze me, governor says

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro this week issued a fierce defense of his administration and its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, after protesters calling for his ouster gathered outside his official residence in Guadalajara, the Casa Jalisco.

pg1cAccording to reporters present, the protest, along with another one held a week earlier, was comprised mainly of disgruntled merchants who have suffered economically from restrictions imposed by state authorities during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as activists from the leading opposition party in Jalisco, Morena.

Alfaro accused his adversaries of using Covid-19 to attack and discredit him but stressed his resolve would not waver. “Governing is sometimes about making difficult decisions for the common good,” Alfaro said. “I prepared myself for that and I will not fail.”

Alfaro also accused anonymous Morena operatives in Mexico City of “spending millions and millions of pesos” to discredit his image across digital platforms.

He highlighted the spate of “fake news” that has circulated on some platforms, including reports that accuse him of stealing medicines that are designated for children with cancer from the federal government.

The attacks, Alfaro said, are part of the 2020-2021 electoral process, which culminate in July next year with federal (congressional), state and municipal elections.
