Covid update: Jalisco drops to ‘medium risk’ as vaccines dribble in

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro has congratulated his own administration after the state dipped into the yellow Covid-19 medium risk category for the first time.

“We’ve done well. Jalisco has managed to face the health emergency while successfully managing the serious economic situation,” the governor boasted.

The Mexican Health Ministry’s “traffic light” system employs four categories based on the Covid-19 transmission rate, active cases and hospitalizations: green (low risk), yellow (medium risk), orange (high risk) and red (maximum risk).

Meanwhile, another 40,950 Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines arrived in Jalisco Wednesday, of which just over half will be given to people over 60 years of age in the Puerto Vallarta health region (see chart above for vaccination locations), Alfaro said. The remainder, 19,500 vaccines, will be applied to health personnel. As of Thursday, February 25, Jalisco had received 161,065 vaccines, 58,690 of them from AstraZeneca, and the rest from Pfizer-BioNTech.

Mexico expects to receive just over 24 million vaccine doses in March, from seven different sources, federal authorities say.
