Brigades were dispatched this week to Tlajomulco and El Salto, the final municipalities in the Guadalajara metropolitan area scheduled to receive the first round of shots in the federal government’s free Covid vaccination program.
Jalisco health authorities say that more than 95 percent of the state’s population over 60 will have received a first shot by the end of this week – covering all 125 municipalities. This is despite several vaccination sites having surplus doses left over at the end of their inoculation rounds.
While residents of Tlaquepaque got their second doses of vaccine this week, over 60s in Zapopan, the largest metro-area municipality, were summoned for their first shots during Semana de Pascua, the week following the Holy Week holiday. In total, 83,181 doses were applied in Zapopan, corresponding to 61.2 percent of the 135,900 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine assigned by federal authorities. In fact, the numbers turning up for inoculations on the final day in Zapopan were so low that authorities put out a call for seniors from any Jalisco municipality who had not yet been vaccinated to take advantage of the 52,000-odd surplus doses.
